Pineapple Habitats
– not just for humans
The Environment Act 2021 required that all future developments produce at least a 10% uplift in biodiversity which is fully supported by the team at Pineapple Homes. In fact, we want to be able improve on the 10% target with your help.
We would like to change the hearts and minds of our new homeowners and wider communities to ensure a positive reaction to the implementation of more diverse habitats in their gardens and the surrounding development.
Introducing a “Bee Hotel” or “Hedgehog House” to your garden would be an easy step to improving biodiversity, help fight against climate change and in turn benefit nature and mental health.
Every Pineapple Home comes with a “Biodiversity Starter Pack” which includes:
Bee / Bug Hotel
Wildflower Seeds
Bird Box
We ask each proud owner of a Pineapple Home to also consider avoiding pesticides and herbicides.
These chemicals can harm not only the pests and weeds, but also the insects and wildlife that depend on them.
Action we are taking to improve biodiversity
A standard part of our house build is to incorporate swift bricks and bat bricks in various locations throughout each development. By working with an Ecological Adviser each development will have an Ecological Appraisal and a Biodiversity Study and from these surveys tailored recommends are made to secure and protect ecological features and realise ecological enhancements were possible.
Swift Bricks
Swift bricks offer a lifeline to these much-loved but much-declined birds.
Why swifts need our help – Swifts only spend a few months in the UK each year, migrating here from Africa every spring to raise their young. They are now on the Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern in the UK, with their numbers falling by 62% between 1995 and 2021.
This is where internal Swift bricks come in as they’re an easy way to provide nest sites for
Swifts that can be simply included in our housing developments. Research also shows they help not only Swifts, but other wildlife, including Red Listed species such as House Sparrows, Starlings, and House Martins.
Integrated Eco Bat Brick
Various plots throughout each development will have a bat box built into the external elevation.
Bats are important animals in many ecosystems, serving as pollinators and predators of insects. Unfortunately, their populations are declining in many areas due to habitat loss. Bat boxes will conserve bat populations by providing habitat for bats and a safe place to live.
Pineapple Homes commits to encourage biodiversity by:
- Retaining as many healthy trees on the site as feasible.
- Retaining as many hedgerows as possible – these act as shelter and pathways for animals.
- Encouraging wildlife corridors – wildlife corridors are pathways that connect different habitats and allow animals to move freely and safely across the landscape.
- Creating diverse habitats – the more varied the landscape is, the more it will attract a wide range of species. Where space permits, we may be able to let some areas grow wild or
be able to create a wet land. In some instances, we will provide hedgehog houses and hibernacula (shelter) log piles. - Providing a ‘Biodiversity Starter Pack’ with every new home.
Pineapple Homes will venture to do its best to work towards a Biodiversity Net Gain on each development through habitat creation, enhancement, and succession.
